Built to get you through theory and on to the road
Theory training is a federal step every new Class A, Class B and hazmat driver has to clear. We make that step simple to buy, clear to follow and properly reported.
The full federal curriculum
Each course follows FMCSA's minimum theory topics for its license or endorsement, from pre-trip inspections and space management to hours of service and post-crash procedures.
Study where you are
Everything happens online, so you can work through lessons between shifts, after school or at home, and pick up where you left off.
An assessment that counts
You finish with the theory assessment and need at least 80% overall, the federal standard every registered provider has to apply.
Reported for you
When you pass, the provider sends your completion to FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. That's what your state checks before you test.
Clear choices, one price each
Three courses, one price each, and no upsell tiers that teach the same thing. You'll see exactly what you're buying before checkout.

What online ELDT covers, and what it doesn't
ELDT has two parts. Theory is the classroom knowledge, and you can finish all of it online. Behind-the-wheel is hands-on driving, and it has to happen in a real truck.
Online with RapidELDT
- Class A theory
- Class B theory
- Hazmat (H) theory, the complete requirement
In person with a BTW provider
- Class A range and public-road driving
- Class B range and public-road driving
- Your state's skills test
Which ELDT course do I need?
Choose what you're working toward.
You need Class A ELDT
Class A theory online, plus range and public-road behind-the-wheel training with a registered BTW provider before your skills test. You have one year from finishing the first part to finish the second.
You need Class B ELDT
Class B theory online, plus Class B behind-the-wheel training before your skills test. Driving a bus? Passenger and school bus endorsements need their own ELDT too.
You need Hazmat ELDT
Hazmat ELDT is theory only, with no behind-the-wheel portion. Finish it before you take your state's hazmat knowledge test. You'll also need a TSA security threat assessment.
A B-to-A upgrade needs ELDT
Upgrading to Class A requires entry-level training from a registered provider, including behind-the-wheel training. RapidELDT doesn't sell a dedicated upgrade course yet. Ask us before you buy and we'll point you to the right option.
P and S endorsements need their own ELDT
First-time passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements require ELDT that includes behind-the-wheel training. RapidELDT doesn't sell these courses yet. See the full requirements.
You probably don't need ELDT for that license
If you were issued your Class A or Class B CDL, or your P, S or H endorsement, before February 7, 2022, ELDT doesn't apply to that license or endorsement. Adding something new later, like hazmat, does need ELDT. Check the exceptions.

Straight answers before you enroll
Can I really do ELDT theory online?
Yes. Federal rules allow the entire theory portion to be delivered online by a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. Behind-the-wheel training for Class A and Class B can't be done online. See what's online and what isn't.
How long does online ELDT theory take?
There's no federal minimum number of hours for theory, so you move at your own pace. You must cover every required topic and score at least 80% on the assessment. Plan your timeline.
How does my completion get to FMCSA?
Your training provider submits it to the Training Provider Registry by midnight of the second business day after you finish. Your state checks the registry before your skills test or hazmat knowledge test. How reporting works.
Do I still need behind-the-wheel training?
For Class A and Class B, yes: you need range and public-road training with a registered behind-the-wheel provider before your skills test. Hazmat ELDT is theory only.
Can I start before I have my learner's permit?
Yes. FMCSA doesn't require a commercial learner's permit before theory training. For Class A and B, finish the rest of your ELDT within one year of completing the first part. Sequence it right.
Who delivers the course?
Our training partner, SaferELDT, delivers the course and reports your completion to FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.
Can my company pay for several drivers?
Yes. For one driver, buy the course directly. For a group, send a training request and a team member will help plan enrollment and payment.

Every course is one payment, fully online and reported by a registered provider.
