ELDT training for trucking companies and fleets

Get new drivers through the federal theory requirement without pulling them into a classroom. Buy single seats directly, or send one request and we'll plan training for your whole group.

Quick answer

Every new Class A or Class B driver, and every driver adding hazmat for the first time, needs ELDT theory from a provider on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. RapidELDT sells that theory online. Enroll one driver at checkout, or request group training and a team member will plan courses, headcount and payment with you.

Two ways to enroll your drivers

Most employers need one of two things: a seat for the new hire starting Monday, or a plan for a class of drivers. We built a path for each so neither one slows you down.

Not sure which course each driver needs? Class A covers tractor-trailers and other combination vehicles. Class B covers straight trucks, dump trucks and large buses. Hazmat is a separate, theory-only endorsement course. Our guide to who needs ELDT sorts out upgrades, endorsements and pre-2022 license holders.

How group training works, step by step

Group enrollment is handled by a person, not an automated cart. Here's exactly who does what.

The ELDT rules employers need to get right

ELDT mistakes cost you test dates and start dates. These rules come straight from FMCSA's regulations and guidance.

  • Training must come from a registered provider. A driver's state checks FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before the skills test, or the hazmat knowledge test. Training from an unlisted source doesn't count. Here's how to verify any provider.
  • Theory and behind-the-wheel can come from different providers. Both must be on the registry. Many fleets buy theory online and run behind-the-wheel in house or through a school.
  • If you train your own drivers, you must be registered too. Motor carriers can be ELDT providers, but only once they're listed on the registry and meet the instructor and curriculum requirements.
  • Hazmat is theory only. A driver adding the H endorsement for the first time needs hazmat theory before the state's hazmat knowledge test. No behind-the-wheel portion is required.
  • Mind the one-year window. For Class A and Class B, a driver must finish the second part of ELDT within one year of finishing the first. Schedule behind-the-wheel training accordingly.
  • Your state may add requirements. Some states go beyond the federal minimum. Check your state licensing agency before you build a hiring timeline around federal rules alone.

Not a trucking company? ELDT applies to you too

ELDT follows the license, not the industry. If your employees need a first Class A or Class B CDL, or a first hazmat endorsement, the same federal training rule applies.

  • Utility companies: line trucks, digger derricks and equipment trailers often push crews into Class A or Class B territory. Hazmat theory matters for crews that haul regulated quantities of fuel or other hazardous materials.
  • Municipal fleets: public works, sanitation and street departments train new CDL holders every year. Some government drivers, such as snow and ice crews in certain states, may qualify for state exemptions, so confirm with your state before enrolling.
  • Delivery fleets: straight-truck delivery routes usually need Class B, and moving to tractor-trailer work means Class A ELDT.
  • Construction and materials: dump trucks, mixers and equipment haulers are common Class B and Class A operations.

Whatever your industry, the process is the same: one driver at checkout, or a group request for several.

What online theory does for your operation

Online theory lets drivers learn the federal curriculum without a classroom schedule. A new hire can study evenings during onboarding, and a yard driver can finish between shifts. That leaves your trainers' time for what only they can do: range and public-road instruction in your equipment.

What we don't promise: we don't guarantee how fast any driver finishes, and there's no employer seat dashboard or self-serve multi-seat checkout today. When those exist, this page will say so.

Request training for your drivers

Takes about a minute. We'll follow up by email to confirm courses, driver count and next steps. This doesn't commit you to anything.

Enter your name.
Enter your company or school name.
Enter a valid email address, like name@company.com.
Enter a phone number with 10 digits, or leave it blank.
Choose an organization type.
Choose a state, or “Several states”.
How many drivers need training?
Choose a driver count.
Which courses? Choose all that apply
Choose at least one course, or “Not sure yet”.
Choose a timeframe.

Group requests are handled by a person, not an automated checkout. Enrolling just one driver? Choose a course and pay directly.

Employer questions

Can our company pay for a driver's course?

Yes. For one driver, buy the course at checkout and enter the driver's email so course access goes to them. For several drivers, send a group request and we'll agree how payment works before anyone enrolls.

Do you offer volume pricing?

Group requests are quoted per course and driver. A team member reviews each request and sends a written quote for the courses and number of drivers you confirm.

Can we see each driver's progress?

There's no employer dashboard today. What every employer can rely on is the federal record: when a driver passes, the training provider reports the completion to FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. Each driver can check their own record in the registry and share it with you.

Does online theory cover everything a new Class A driver needs?

No. It covers the theory portion. Class A and Class B drivers also need range and public-road behind-the-wheel training from a registered provider before the skills test. Hazmat ELDT is theory only.

We run our own behind-the-wheel program. Can our drivers still use online theory?

Yes. Theory and behind-the-wheel can come from different registered providers. Your company must be listed on the Training Provider Registry itself to deliver and report the behind-the-wheel portion.
